Mormons and HomosexualityGays and Lesbisan Mormons can have a very difficult time in the Church because the relationship between a man and a woman in many ways is central to Latter-day Saint theology. Rather than simply pointing to several obscure and culturally influenced verses in the Bible, Latter-day Saints have, in effect, a very specific theology of gender. The LDS Church teaches that through the marriage of a man and a woman, both can experience the greatest blessings of God. This page is not the appropriate place to give a full exposition of this doctrine. Simply keep in mind that Latter-day Saints view gender as eternal and that the union of the two genders is essential to God's purposes. Indeed, Mormon theology even allows for the existence of a Heavenly Mother - although this doctrine is not canonized. Devan Hite - a gay Latter-day Saint at Yale Divinity School has begun writing a play exploring some of the struggles gay Latter-day Saints face in their spiritual life. Act one can be found here. Additionally, Dr. Ron Schow of Idaho State University has put together some interesting videos documenting some of the struggles that faithful Gay and Lesbian Latter-day Saints struggle with as they try to come to terms with their religious faith and their inborn desires. |
